Me going green … and dragging my family with me, kicking and screaming!

Baby steps toward self sufficience and greenocity

So maybe the egghead wash DID do something … April 26, 2009

So, I washed this morning with baking soda again, and it feels clean yet a little waxy again, just like it did when I did the 2nd BS was last time.  Hmm … I think I might be figuring out a routine here!  BS wash (1tb +1c water) with conditioner, 2 days later eggs and milk (2 yolks +1/4c milk, to be specific), 2 days then BS/conditioner … rinse … repeat … (HA!  Punny!!)  Or maybe it was the honey last time that took care of me.  SHIT!  Foiled again!  I need to be less willy nilly about this, and more precise if I’m every going to make it work.

I meant to add a couple drops of tea tree oil this morning to see if it would help my scalp condition (because being poo free has NOT helped one bit, it actually seems a little worse), but I was in a rush, and it wasn’t in either of the places I looked.  I thought it was in the bathroom behind the mirror, but nope.  I also looked under the kitchen sink since I use it for cleaning on occasion.  Nope.  *shrug*  I’ll have to find that.

Another thing I haven’t tried yet is the apple cider vinegar rinse yet.  I just don’t think I’m ready to go there, and I think it’s supposed to be in lieu of using conditioner.  I’m not totally clear on that just yet.  Have to do more reading …

Additionally, I think my hair has taken on a more ash tone, like it’s being washed out.  I don’t like this one bit, but I can’t be certain because my hair color is currently from a box (I’m going to grow out all color, but I last dyed it a shade similar to my natural around mid-March, it’ll take about a year to grow it all out), so you never know if it’s a function of the dye or something else.  Anyway, I read something about using lemon juice instead of BS.  Interesting, no?  I may give that a try too, after having read more.

It’s been TWO WEEKS since I used shampoo.  Weird.

Clean at last April 23, 2009

OK, I figured it out. The baking soda wash is very precise. It HAS to be a full tablespoon to do any good. I read that doing the baking soda wash more than once a weekish would really dry out the hair, so, Monday the 12th I used 1tb baking soda dissolved in 1c water to wash my hair, and then conditioned. It was great. THEN I washed with just water 2 days later, and it was ick. THEN I was afraid to wash with full strength baking soda again, so I used 1/2tb with 1c water the next day. Hair was still ick. *GRRR* So THEN, at the recommendation of another no poo-er, I washed with egg and milk … well, you read how well THAT turned out.

So, yesterday, I washed with 1tb baking soda and 1c water (I also added some honey because that was recommended too, don’t know if that actually mattered though), and my hair was FINALLY CLEAN!! No greasy or waxy feeling at all. Although, my scalp is a bit itchy. It usually is with shampoo anyway though, so *shrug*.

So, I will probably use the baking soda wash twice a week.

This might actually work!

Egghead April 21, 2009

So, yeah, I did the egg yolk/milk wash yesterday. Meh. It’s really hard to “wash” with something like that. I’m not confident that I got it spread around enough, as some parts of my hair feel cleaner than others. Also, I rinsed more than thoroughly with butt ass cold water, then added a little hot water so I could finish showering in comfort, I STILL ended up with little bits of what I assume to have been cooked egg in my hair. Eww. Two people said that my hair looks and feels fine. I dunno. It doesn’t look or feel fine to me … It’s not BAD per se, just not good, like, well, shampoo clean hair.

So, I don’t have to work again until Sunday, I’ll keep trying different things until then. I still haven’t used any apple cider vinegar, honey, or tea tree oil …

The straight poop on no poo April 19, 2009

Ha!  We have this plumbing DIY book called The Straight Poop.  I find that hysterical.

I’m not writing about plumbing today though.  I’m writing about something I learned of a week ago that I had never even ever ever ever considered.  I never DREAMED that I would try to live a no poo lifestyle.

That’s shamPOO.  WTF, OMG!!!

I was perusing one of my fav message boards a week ago, and noticed a thread titled “Going shampoo free” (click it).  I thought “Whaaa???” and read immediately.  The concept is that you “wash” your hair with things like baking soda, apple cider vinegar, honey, egg yolks, milk, tea tree oil, and then condition with commercial products that do not contain ingredients ending in ‘cone’ or ‘xane.’  If you check out the thread, you will see that very early on  I (razberiswrl) said something like “interesting, maybe that would help my scalp issues, but no.”  I changed my mind shortly after, and have not washed my hair with shampoo since Saturday, the 11th.  OMG.  I’m crazy.  I have washed it with baking soda, and have rinsed with super hot water, and conditioned since, and well, I don’t know what I think yet.

So, supposedly, there’s a “detox” period of 2 weeks to up to 2 months in which the hair will be kind of uck.  I don’t know if I buy that the scalp, a part of the skin organ, would need TWO months to acclimate to a new habit, especially since it renews, what, every 2 weeks or so??  So anyway, I’m feeling a little gross at the moment.  My hair doesn’t stink, and it’s not *greasy* per say, but it does seem to have a waxy feel and is a bit weighed down.  I’m supposed to “wash” it with egg yolks mixed with milk tomorrow (if you try this, remember, eggs + hot water = cooked eggs.  Rinse with cold).  If that doesn’t take care of my issues, I will be heading to Target to pick up some Kiss My Face or Burt’s Bees shampoo for the mean time, then I will be placing an order from Blue House Soaps.

I’ll report back, LOL.
