Me going green … and dragging my family with me, kicking and screaming!

Baby steps toward self sufficience and greenocity

It’s a dog’s life … July 24, 2009

I never understood that phrase …  I’m just about catchy titles.

Anyway, our family dog had to be put down tonight.  She’s been deteriorating for months, and we just couldn’t see how bad it had gotten until it was unmistakably apparent this afternoon.

Roxy was around for 14 years.   Not too bad for an inbred retriever!  She was an enourmous pain in the ass, and yet the best dog ever.  She will be missed, to be sure.

Observe:

Bye, girl.

Soooo … I’ve always had a space issue in the kitchen.  It’s very poorly designed, and in order to have a full size table in there, I have to sacrifice a door.  There are 2 doors in my kitchen, one leads to the back yard, and the other leads to the garage.  If my chest freezer weren’t in the garage, sacrificing that door would be no big deal … but it is, and I get something out of that freezer nearly every day.

Anywho, we had a big ass table in there, and had to scoot it back and forth whenever we needed to use a door.  So, I’ve been on the lookout for a smaller table for quite some time.  Friday was my lucky day.  I ran across a listing on Craigslist.com for a round tile top table with a leaf in nice condition for $15.  Yep.  FIFTEEN BUCKS.  CHEAP!  I jumped on it.

Here it is all disassembled (didn’t have the foresight to take a BEFORE before pic, LOL):

As is, it was livable.  There was no need to do anything really other than wipe it down and get on with life, but I wanted something a little bit different.  Something with jazz hands.  Or spirit fingers.  They are pretty much interchangeable … as long as one or the other is there, my life is good.  So, I went to Lowes and bought some stuff.

So … I taped off the tile and sanded like a mofo:

Then I painted!  And laquered, and let it dry …

Then I put it in my kitchen.  Perfecto!

Now I just need to figure out what to put in those pretty jars …

Oh, and yeah, I know, my chairs look like crap.  I know.  I know.  There’s a certain kitty cat that uses them for scratching posts.  I can’t imagine I will ever change him, so he can destroy those babies (they aren’t mine anyway, the chairs OR the cat, HA!), and I’ll continue to bide my time until I find a set of matching chairs that I can paint  … or not …

This is something I meant to share weeks ago.  When the kids and I went strawberry picking, I sent them ahead of me to pick, so I could come behind them to get everything they missed.  When their containers got full, they could come back to me, dump in the larger tray, and go back to pick more.  It worked out nicely.

So, here’s what I found when processing the fruits when we got home:

And a slew of others with deformities perhaps not as grotesque, LOL!  When I asked them why they picked THESE berries instead of the normal shaped ones, they responded whole heartedly that they were COOL.  Well, I guess they are kind of cool.  LOL!

Interlude for a birthday

Ugg … I have all these half written entries staring at me from the right side of the screen.  It’s both embarrassing and crippling.  I’m sure that doesn’t make sense to most.

Anyway …

My daughter’s 6th birthday was this Wednesday.  She had an odd cake request.  She heard the song Single Ladies by Beyonce a while back, and just loves it … She asked for a Beyonce CAKE!!  WTH?!?  LOL!!!  Who am I to say no though??  So, I gave it my best:

Now, I know, I know, that is NOT a Beyonce doll, but I’m just a mom with a budget, and I couldn’t see spending $30 or more plus shipping on a doll from 1998 on Ebay or whatever.  So, off to the store M and I went.  We scoured the aisles for a Beyonce lookalike.  We ended up choosing the lovely Sasha from the Bratz collection, which was a MAJOR gift in and of itself.  You see, until NOW, M has not been allowed to have any Bratz toys … I don’t find them all that appropriate for little girls …  Sometimes one has to bend.  *shrug*

I think it turned out pretty good, and The Divine Ms. M was delighted, so, mission accomplished.  If you want to know how to make a similar cake, just google (or Bing!)  “princess cake,” and you’ll find lots of pics and instructions.

Here’s a funny pic of Beyonce’s near miss:

AHHH!!  FI-YAH!!  Heh.

Just for fun, here are some pictures of cakes past …

Are they Lye-ers? May 31, 2009

I’ve been reading a lot of labels lately to see if these “all natural” products are all that natural.  I have the Burt’s Bees peppermint/rosemary bar soap at home, and the ingredients are super simple.  Several oils (coconut, palm, olive, peppermint, soy), an exfoliant (ground almond shell), and an extract (rosemary).  That’s IT.  However, while looking at some of their other products (like Baby Bee soap), I noticed “vegetable soap base” listed.  I didn’t know what that was, so I googled it of course.  Turns out, it’s fat, vegetable or animal, mixed with lye.  And according to THIS site, without lye, there is no soap.   They have recipes for all sorts of soap, castile included.  Now, I have a bottle of Dr. Bronner’s at home, and guess what is not on the label??  Lye.

So who’s lyeing?  Does that not have to be declared on labels??  Is it bad for us??  I don’t know. I’ve always wanted to try my hand at soap making though, so I may just have to figure the answer out on my own.

So long for now, no poo

I lasted exactly SEVEN weeks.  That, in and of itself, is quite interesting.  However, the act of simplifying my life was actually quite complicated.  You know, all the mixing and pouring and shaking and being careful and all that.  It was a huge pain … and it SMELLED BAD.

I dunno.  I just wasn’t into it this morning in the shower.  We had a late night last night seeing Up! and Star Trek with the kids at the drive in.  Didn’t get home until 2 this morning.  Then I had to be up to get ready for work.  I’m just not a morning person in the first place, and throw in less than usual sleep, well, let’s just say it ain’t pretty.

So, I have been thinking for some time about LOW POO.  This is where you use stuff like Burt’s Bees or Kiss My Face or another “all natural” or organic product.  I’ve also been using Burt’s Fabulously Fresh Peppermint & Rosemary Body Bar for the last month or so to wash my body.  Every day I read the ingredient list: soybean oil, coconut oil, palm oil, olive oil, peppermint oil, almond seed meal, and rosemary leaf extract.

What’s so bad about that?  Actually, how in the HELL does a bunch of OIL make soap??  I’m honestly wondering if something is left out in that list because every other one of their products has vegetable soap base or something else in it that is maybe questionable like “fragrance.”

Anyway, I plopped that bar right on my head this morning and washed with that, LOL!  Then I used just a touch (srsly, like dime size bloop) of the V05 conditioner I’ve been using on M’s tresses (silicone and silicone derivative free).  My hair looks better than it has in a while.  It’s not big and frizzy and dry and brittle.  It’s quite straight, actually, and soft and smooth.  And it doesn’t itch.  At all.  It itched with shampoo, it itched with baking soda, it itched with applesauce and egg yolks and lemon juice and vinegar and conditioner only … it doesn’t itch right now.  And, while there are a few flakes, it’s not half … not a quarter as bad as it’s been.

I think I’m going to continue this regimen to see what happens.
